Want to try your hand at 3D printing? Curious about what this technology is, does? Want to figure out the software? Need some insights from friends and community to get you started? Just want to stare listlessly at the magic of gooey plastic oozing into a creation?nnCome on down to this open, free event. This is an informal workshop day where anything goes. If you're interested in 3D printing (or just being a nerd in general), just bring yourself, your brain, and any snacks or accessories you might like. nnLorin will facilitate, but emphasis is on everyone learning from each other (Lorin is a professional educator, which means that he's smart, and good at rhetoric, but not necessarily the font of all wisdom on any topic). nnWe'll start up the printers and set up some movies in the lounge including the new documentary, “Print The Legend”. nnLorin will bring 2 printers he uses to teach and do workshops with:nnUltimaker 2 (provided by Schoff Foundation,and UCForward, and co-owned by UC, Hive13, and community education partners)nPrintrbot simple metal (Lorin's personal teaching machine)nCopy of Simplify3D if you'd like to try Lorin's or use Cura or whatever open source tool you prefer!nnOther Hive13 printers / resources based on availability.nnOpen and free to all. Have you ever wanted to design your own PCB from scratch? Are you curious about the design process and the tools and techniques used by pros and hackers alike? Maybe you have some experience with Eagle PCB and want to try out a free and open source design suite...nnNow's your chance to learn KiCad!nnKiCad is an electronics design suite that allows you to create schematics, printed circuit boards, and more with few limitations. It is a completely free and open source suite that runs on Linux, OS X, and Windows.nnThis workshop will cover the basic workflow of KiCad, but will not cover techniques for creating good electronic circuits. The end goal is for you to be able to start a basic project and know where to go for help if you get stuck.nnWhen: Thursday, January 28th from 7:30pm until about 10pm

nWhat to bring: A laptop with KiCad 4 installed (a mouse is recommended, but not required)nnNo registration necessary. Please show up at least 10 to 15 minutes early so you can get your computer situated and set up.

Update: sign up links have been added 1/13.nnWe are excited to announce our first ever set of progressive metal working classes! Whether you have never worked with metal, or have experience building with metal, these classes will teach you all the tips and tricks of creating structures with metal! These courses strike a balance between the practical/theoretical, and safety/fun.nnClasses are limited to 5 people per class to insure that everyone has plenty of time to get hands on experience with each tool. Participants of all levels are welcome in each and every class (in fact it is highly recommended if your schedule allows for it). These classes do directly build on each other and as such priority will be given to participants that sign up for both. It seems that folks really want to get familiar with our CNC equipment. So Lorin Parker, our electronics warden, will also be offering an introductory course on the same day with Brad to familiarize people with the basics of our CNC. This to help familiarize you with the CNC and demystify things about it, not an certification class. The date and time will be Saturday January 9th from 10am to 12pm.
