Join us at Hive13 this Tuesday, March 8, after our quick 7:30 pm business meeting, when Richard Polt, local Xavier philosophy professor and creator/webmaser for The Classic Typewriter Page website shares his passion for the humble typewriter; noting its birth, evolution, and rebirth, with examples from his extensive collection of machines.nnThink disruptive technologies are a just a recent phenom? What hardware did you first use for text editing and word processing way back when? Well, in the 19th century, the must-have, high-tech, new-thing was the typewriter. Appreciate the technology of entrepreneurial makers from over 100 years ago and consider the path that got us to the QWERTY keyboard. Richard's book The Typewriter Revolution shows how old is new and documents how these magical mechanical contraptions are enjoying a surprising second life today.nnMembers, guests, first-time-walk-ins, and all those interested are welcome to Richard's talk at Hive13 on Tuesday, March 8, after our 7:30pm business meeting. Hive13 PTDR Garners Eight Editor's Choice Blue Ribbons at World Maker Faire - New York 2015
By jim on
The Hive13 team (consisting of Ian, Ryan, Franklin, Dustin, Katie, Kevin, and Jim) brought our version of Power Tool Drag Racing to the World Maker Faire - New York 2015 and garnered eight prestigious MAKE Magazine Editor's Choice blue ribbons for the effort.nnThis first-time appearance at WMF-NY 2015 was our fourth racing event of the year and it culminated our 2015 season. This season's preceding race events were held at Maker Faires in Detroit, Cincinnati, and Louisville earlier in the summer and fall. New York was a great venue featuring both bleacher and sky-box seating for the overflow crowds that watched a steady stream of general public match races from open to close on both days of beautiful weather. Here's a YouTube link showing a typical race.nnWe've now done eleven events in our three seasons, each one better than the last and no one's gotten hurt. Thanks to one and all that have made it happen. Stay tuned for details on the planned improvements for an even bigger and better season next year. n

nDo you think the “Maker Movement” is something new? Well, think again. This photo shows Henry Ford contemplating his first 1896 Quadricycle. By the 1920’s Henry had made his 10 millionth Model T, a.k.a. Tin Lizzy, shown behind him, and we now have the world-wide auto industry of today.nnContemplating growing your own maker hobby into something larger like Henry did?nnJoin us this Tuesday, August 11, after the 7:30pm business meeting, when not-quite-so-old ‘Old-Hand’ Clarence Stogner (father of member Will) takes us for a ride down his own memory lane.nnClarence’s story started in the US Navy working on manual-control piston-engine T28 aircraft and A6E jet aircraft with advanced hydraulic systems. Combining his early machining background with a mechanical engineering degree, he has worked on designing and improving valve/actuators and related controls for the past 39 years. He was a principal owner in two businesses that spanned 18 of those years. Presently at A-T Controls here in Cincinnati, he leads a product development team that adapts valve/actuator hydraulic products from Asia for the special demands of oil well field operations.nnMembers, guests, first-time-walk-ins, and all those interested are welcome to come for this interesting talk on Tuesday, August 11, after the 7:30pm business meeting.
